Welcome To Shrub End Surgery

Extended Access

Extended Access appointments are now available to Colchester Medical Practice patients from 6.30 – 8pm Monday to Friday, and also on Saturday & Sunday mornings and afternoons. These clinics are being provided by the GP + service at Bluebell Surgery in Colchester. Patients are able to make pre-bookable appointments to see a GP or Practice Nurse. For the Clinician seeing you at that appointment to effectively treat you they will need access to your full medical record, you will be asked for your permission at the time of booking your appointment. Please speak to a receptionist  at the surgery who can give you further details on the clinics available and will be able to book you an appointment if required.


Annual flu clinics will be held at Shrub End Surgery on:

  • Thursday 18th October - 2pm to 6pm

These clinics are for all eligible patients; 65 or over, pregnant, asthmatic, COPD, those with chronic illness and diabetic patients.

Child flu appointments are pre-booked and are only for patients who have received an invite letter.  Please contact the surgery to book an appointment and bring in the completed consent form.  Children of primary school age may be eligible to have the nasal flu vaccination at their school.  These children will not be eligible to have the vaccination at the surgery and the school immunisation date is missed. 


  • Your surgery has been having constructive discussions with Parsons Heath Surgery about merging our practices, to build on the benefits that came out of our original merger of Castle Gardens, Wimpole Road & Shrub End Surgeries to form Colchester Medical Practice (CMP).

Please complete the relevant forms and bring these to the surgery with proof of identification and address.  It takes approximately one week to fully register with the surgery and during this time we ask you to obtain sufficient medication from your current GP Surgery during this transition period.  

Prescription Requests

Shrub End Surgery is happy to accept email requests for prescription items.  Please note on your email your name, date of birth and the item requested.  The process time of prescriptions will remain the same.

When We Are Closed

From 18.30 each weekday evening until 08:00 and at weekends and Bank Holidays, emergency medical cover is provided by the Colchester Out of Hours Service. The Out-of-hours services are generally busy so please think carefully before asking to see a doctor and only do so if you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens. They can be contacted on 111.

For patients with minor illness or injury you can also attend The Colchester Walk in Centre, Primary Care Centre,Turner Road Colchester CO4 5JR is open from 07:00 to 22:00 every day including bank holidays, no appointments are necessary.

The Walk in Centre is able to offer the following services:

  • Minor illness
  • Minor throat/chest infections
  • Minor stomach complaints
  • Urine infections
  • Earache and ear infection - Please note that the Centre does not offer ear irrigation (removal of wax
  • Skin complaints, including rashes, minor allergic reactions and insect bites/stings
  • Minor Injury
  • Minor wounds, bruising, swelling - please note that the Centre does not offer wound suturing
  • Minor head injury with no loss of consciousness or vomitting
  • Muscle, bone and joint injuries e.g. sprains, strains and soft tissue injury -
  • Dental advice - Please note that the Centre gives advice only and suggested pain relief
  • Eye problems e.g. infection, removal of foreign objects
  • Emergency Contraception and Advice
  • Smoking Cessation

These are just examples of the type of minor injuries and illnesses that can be assisted with at the Walk in Centre, if you are unsure if they can meet your needs, please call them on 01206 314015

Please only attend the Accident and Emergency department if your problem requires urgent medical attention.  Inappropriate attendance delays treatment for others who may need urgent assistance.

In a genuine emergency you should call 999.


The Practice is pleased to provide patients with access to its Clinical System via a Secure Web Interface.

You can book and cancel appointments online, request repeat medication and view your medical records online. To enable you to access this service  you need to register. A passport or driving licence will also need to be produced so that your account can be activated.

 The date of the next Patient Participant Group Meeting is to be confirmed but will be held at Castle Gardens Medical Centre, 78 East Hill, CO1 2QS  - parking is available at the rear of the building.
